FAQ: Transaction Limits and Payment Processing

Q: Are there minimum or maximum transaction limits for Cash App Pay?

A: Yes, there are both minimum and maximum transaction limits:

  • Minimum: $0.01
  • Maximum: Dynamic per customer based on account history, identity verification status, and available funds (stored balance + linked debit card limits)

Customer limits are not visible to merchants and vary by individual customer behavior, similar to credit card limits.

Q: Are there restrictions when using Cash App Pay for electronic goods or gift cards?

A: Yes. Cash App Pay has restrictions for certain product categories and gift card types.

Restricted product categories include:

  • Alcoholic Beverages
  • Cannabis
  • Charities & Organizations
  • Gambling & Sports Betting
  • Prescriptions
  • User-Generated Content

Gift card requirements:

  • Closed-loop gift cards (redeemable only within your ecosystem) are generally supported
  • Open-loop or third-party merchant gift cards require additional review
  • Gift cards must be non-transferable outside the merchant ecosystem with no cash-out functionality

Merchants selling restricted goods must implement the restricted goods indicator in the Payments API for compliance purposes, particularly for sponsored (underage) accounts.

Q: Does Cash App Pay support multiple captures on a single authorization?

A: No. Cash App Pay does not support multi-capture (multiple separate captures on one authorization). You cannot authorize 100andthencapture100 and then capture 30 followed by another $20 capture.

Q: Does Cash App Pay support partial capture (undercapture)?

A: Yes. Cash App Pay supports capturing less than the authorized amount. For example, you can authorize 100andcaptureonly100 and capture only 50. The remaining $50 will be automatically released to the customer.

Q: Does Cash App Pay support overcapture (capturing more than the authorized amount)?

A: Yes, with proper configuration. Overcapture is commonly used for scenarios like adding tips after the initial authorization.

This feature must be enabled by the internal team. Please reach out to your Solutions Engineer or Technical Account Manager for more information about enabling overcapture for your merchant account.

Card network overcapture limits vary by network and merchant use case. For example, Visa generally allows up to 15% overcapture, though higher limits can be configured for specific scenarios (e.g., QSR merchants).

Q: Can the authorization window be extended beyond 7 days?

A: Extension conditions are limited due to card networks rules and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Please reach out to your Solutions Engineer or Technical Account Manager to discuss authorization window extension requests.
